Chapter 17 From 1750 to 1900, Europe began moving towards the Industrial Revolution which was influenced by the Scientific Revolution. This led to rapid production generating wealth and power that allowed Europe to dominate globally for some time. Explaining the Industrial Revolution A growing human population and the need for energy resulted in the Industrial Revolution. More energy, rapid production of goods and new innovations took a toll on the environment as waste was being dumped into rivers and the air was polluted. New innovations began at the textile industry then moved to iron and steel production. Later on, more advancements were made in chemicals, electricity and machinery. The Industrial Revolution occurred in Europe because they were motivated by the need for revenue so governments actively granted charters and monopolies to encourage commerce and innovation. Chapter 16 Part 2 Echoes of Revolution The American Revolution caused the British to exert greater control over its other colonies in India and China. Even today Britain's effect on China can still be seen. When I was in Hong Kong, I noticed that some people were speaking English and some stores looked really Western with English signs. Small revolutions erupted all over Europe. In Western Europe and America, all males were given equal rights by 1914. In Russia, military officers tried to create a constitutional state. Enlightenment thinkers, inspiration from the American and French revolutions and people of religion made moral arguments against slavery. The fact that people began to see that slavery wasn't needed for economic success and the brutality of suppressing revolts from slaves combined with all the other ways of thinking formed abolitionist movements in Britain which forced the government to end slavery. Chapter 16 Part 1 It was an interesting reminder that the Haitian revolution drew inspiration from North American and French revolutions then Latin American revolutions drew inspiration from the Haitian revolution. Atlantic Revolutions in a Global Context Many civilizations around the world like China, Russia and Africa were experiencing revolutions not just North America, France and Haiti. The wars which drained Europe were global and forced Britain and France to seek money from their citizens which lead to the revolutions. The Atlantic revolutions were linked in that Thomas Jefferson helped the French Revolution and the Haiti government helped Latin America. The inspirations for these revolutions came from the Enlightenment and the most popular idea was popular sovereignty which meant that the power came from the people.
